Off-the-shelf is the right choice for a great many businesses, and we say so honestly when that is the case. But there are situations where standard solutions create more friction than they resolve, and then it is worth considering something custom.
When off-the-shelf is right
Ready-made solutions exist precisely because many businesses have the same needs. Platforms such as WordPress, Shopify and various industry-specific systems are mature, well documented and maintained by the supplier. They are faster to get started with and cheaper up front.
Off-the-shelf works well when:
- The need is relatively standard and does not require special adaptation
- Speed to market matters
- You have no need to own or control the code itself
- The solution covers 80–90 per cent of the need without major workarounds
When custom makes sense
Custom development pays off when standard solutions require so many adaptations that you are in practice adapting your workflow to the tool instead of the other way round.
That typically applies when:
- You have workflows or business logic that do not fit into a ready-made template
- The solution has to integrate with systems that off-the-shelf products do not support
- The requirements for performance, security or scalability exceed what a standard platform provides
- You need full control over the code and future development
The question to ask yourself
Are you adapting your operations to the tool, or the tool to your operations? If you are constantly bending your work processes to fit into a ready-made solution, that is a sign that off-the-shelf may not be the right tool for the job.
